Disadvantages Of Homeschooling
Disadvantages of Homeschooling. While most people who take up homeschooling are sold on it positive outcomes, it is important to consider the downside to homeschooling. Clearly, there are difficulties and disadvantages associated with homeschooling. Below are four examples.
First, the responsibility for teaching your child rests solely on you. You cannot blame anyone else if your child seems to be lagging behind on skills observed in peers. If your child cannot do the things that are expected from other children of his age group, you may have difficulty accepting your limitation as a teacher.
Second, a critical part of homeschooling is the time that you have to spend with your child. To succeed as a homeschooler, you may have to give up some of your time with friends, non-essential shopping, and certain forms of entertainment inorder to dedicate additional time to your child. This can become frustrating at times. You have to learn to take the aggravation with equanimity and wait for the rewards with patience and enthusiasm.
Third, the parent who serves as a home school teacher, is unlikely to have much time to pursue an outside career. This means that personal career development, as well as the family's financial well-being, may be negatively affected. To cope with financial stress, you may have to learn to live on a more strictly controlled budget.
Fourth, if you are the primary home school teacher in your family, you cannot take a break when you feel like it. Feelings of guilt will assail you if you neglect studies just because you are feeling blue. You may also fear that the child will take advantage of the situation. Even when you have given homework, you have to be around to give a helping hand. This means that anytime your child is around you, you are on duty! For some, this may mean working every waking hour. You will have to be creative to schedule your own opportunities for outside social interactions.
